3 Common Styles of Horse Fencing

3 Common Styles of Horse Fencing

Well-built horse fencing is a must for farms, stables, and riding arenas, and these three styles are popular choices.

Horses are some of the most gorgeous and powerful creatures to coexist with humans; there’s a good reason why many civilizations and cultures view horses with great respect and reverence. For Virginians who have the privilege of working with horses, creating a safe and secure space for these animals to run, rest, and play is paramount. Well-built horse fencing is a must for farms, stables, and riding arenas, and the experts at Hercules Fence are committed to crafting all kinds of reliable barriers. These three styles of horse fencing are among the most popular:

Split Rail Fences Offer Rustic Appeal

Split rail fences are popular, both for properties with horses and those without. They consist of vertical posts and horizontal boards. Instead of the boards being attached with nails or screws, the boards in a split rail fence are secured within slots in each post. They can be made of vinyl or wood. While wood fences can be susceptible to rot and termite damage, they also offer a timeless aesthetic that home and business owners love. Vinyl split rail fences are a popular alternative; horses may not chew on vinyl fences as much.

Paddock Fences are a Horse Fencing Staple

Like split rail fences, paddock fences feature vertical posts with a handful of horizontal boards between them. Unlike split rail fences, the boards in paddock fences are secured on one side of the posts with screws or nails. Many horse owners choose to add wire mesh to keep their horses from getting hooves stuck between the rails. With many types of horse fencing, it’s common practice to secure boards to the horse-facing side of the posts. It’s also common to choose bolts or screws over nails for horse fencing applications.

Crossbuck and Estate Fences Feature Decorative Detail

Estate fences (also called crossbuck fences) are very similar to both paddock fences and split rail fences. The primary difference is that estate fences feature a decorative “X” between each post. This is made by crossing two of the middle boards in each section. Although estate fences are a popular choice for properties with horses, many horse owners supplement these barriers with wire mesh and other horse-safe options to prevent animals from getting their legs stuck between the boards.
