When it comes to installing a fence on your residential property, you have many different things to consider: material, location, color, and more. One crucial part of residential fence planning is figuring out how tall you want your fence to be. This can be determined in part by your local building codes or HOA regulations, but the rest of the decision comes down to the purpose of the fence and your personal preference. Read on to discover the recommended heights of five common types of residential fence.
1. Boundary Fence
A boundary fence is used primarily to delineate a homeowner’s property. Some boundary fences are quite low and decorative, while others are tall and plain. Boundary fences can be made of any material, but many are made of wood with the classic picket look. Wrought iron is another popular decorative material. Boundary fences in front yards are usually around three feet tall, while fences in backyards are closer to six feet tall.
2. Dog Fence
If the primary purpose of your fence is to contain a dog, the height will vary depending on the size of your dog. Anywhere from four to six feet tall should be enough for an average dog, but dog fences have other considerations. If your dog likes to dig or is an avid chewer, there are additional measures you should take to ensure that your fence is effective.
3. Pool Fence
In many jurisdictions, installing a fence is required for homes with a pool. Wood, steel, and aluminum are all popular materials for pool fences. The height for your pool fence will likely depend on local codes, but many are around four feet tall. While many homeowners choose wood as a material for pool fences due to its aesthetic, you must also consider that it will likely be exposed to chlorinated water regularly and must be maintained.
4. Privacy Fence
As you might expect, privacy fences are usually on the taller side at six feet tall. As with any fence, you should check your local ordinances and HOA regulations before installing a privacy fence. Privacy fences can be made of any material, but most of them are made of either solid panels of vinyl or wood or of posts of various materials with smaller-than-usual gaps between them.
5. Garden Fence
Garden fences are often designed to show off and accentuate a garden’s plantlife. As such, garden fences are often low with wide gaps between the posts. These fences are usually around three or four feet tall unless deer or other animals must be kept out.
