If you’re considering adding a new fence to your yard, you’ve probably already waded into research about all of the different styles and options. Overwhelmed yet? One increasingly popular type of privacy fence you should consider is the board-on-board style, otherwise known as the shadowbox fence.
What Is a Shadowbox Fence?
Shadowbox is a privacy fencing style that uses pickets on either side, usually one by six feet, with four-inch gaps between each picket. This results in an impression of openness because there is a small gap between pickets. However, this opening is hard to see through because of the pickets on the other side. The resulting fence is visually pleasing from either side, provides security and privacy, and allows for some air movement.
What Are The Advantages?
Shadowbox fences are privacy fences, so they offer peace of mind that your kids and pets can play safely in your yard. They also provide superior weather resistance and durability and are less likely to need repair. This is because the gaps between the front and back boards allow the wind to slip through, so even powerful winds are less likely to damage this type of fence than a standard stockade fence. Alternating pickets on both sides also distributes the boards’ weight more evenly, resulting in less sag overtime. Shadowbox fences are also very visually appealing, from both sides. You won’t have to worry about your neighbor disliking the view of the structure from their side if you face the pickets towards the inside, nor vice versa. Ultimately, the way that light plays through the gaps makes for a gorgeous fence from any direction. Finally, there are many different ways to customize your shadowbox fence, including wood types, stain colors, and finishes. The final product can be unique to your home and beautifully match your aesthetic, no matter what your style is.
What Are The Disadvantages?
Shadowbox fences don’t offer the total privacy of a stockade fence. The small gaps may be large enough for some parts of the yard to be visible, and they also may allow climbing vines to secure themselves more easily to the fence. Shadowbox fences also use slightly more materials than a stockade fence, since the spacing of the boards on either side does overlap slightly.
