Chain Link Fence Installation: What Home and Business Owners Need to Know

If you’re considering chain link fence installation for your residential or commercial property, here’s what you need to know.

A fence is a valuable addition to your home and property. Fences are a visual indicator of property lines, and, depending on the type of fence, they may also ensure privacy. They provide security for your property and keep your family safe by keeping people out of your yard and keeping kids and pets contained. One of the most popular types of fencing for any property is the chain link fence. If you’re considering chain link fence installation for either your residential or commercial property, here’s what you need to know.

Rules and Regs

Before beginning any fencing project, it is important to know what you are and are not allowed to do. Many cities and municipalities have regulations about fence height, distance to the road or sidewalk, fencing material, and other qualities. Your area may or may not require a permit for fence installation as well. Finally, if you have a home owners’ association, don’t forget to check with them too. Some HOAs have rules against chain link fence installation, so be sure to check before you commit.

Neighbor Relations

Before installing a fence, always take the time to let your neighbors know your intentions. While they can’t stop you from installing a fence on your property, it’s always a good idea to let people know when you’re planning something that could change their views or the way they use their yard (if, for instance, your new fence shades their garden). Open communication before is always a better choice than animosity after.

Weather and Wear

Chainlink fencing is a very sturdy choice, but climate and weather can still take a toll. In areas that see freezing temperatures during much of the winter, for instance, safely installing a fence often requires that fence posts be anchored in concrete. If they’re not, the disruption that occurs when water in the soil freezes could destabilize the fence.

Function Foremost

While it is important to choose a fence style and material that will match your home’s beautiful aesthetic, the fence’s function is the most critical consideration. Having a fence that looks great but doesn’t do what you need it to is not worth the cost of having it installed. Before you decide on a style, make sure you know what you want the fence to achieve: security, privacy, safety, or something else.
