Fence Height: How Tall Should My Fence Be?

Fence Height: How Tall Should My Fence Be?

Appropriate fence height is critical, but how tall a fence should be depends on a few important factors. Here are some things to consider when designing your new barrier.

Designing a residential or commercial fence is an exciting prospect for many property owners. There are loads of choices to make, and each one can have significant benefits for your facility’s appearance and security. However, one decision that many new fence buyers struggle with is how tall to make their barrier. Appropriate fence height is critical, but how tall a fence should be depends on a few important factors. Here are some things to consider when choosing fence height.

Fence Height for Garden or Boundary Fences

For some homeowners, fences are meant to be primarily decorative. If you need a fence that can clearly mark your property’s boundary and you do not have significant security concerns, a fence height of about three to four feet is likely adequate. Many gardens, parks, and commercial spaces feature boundary fences that still offer excellent visibility, allowing home and business owners to show off their plants and structures while maintaining a distinct perimeter.

Privacy and Security Fences: How Tall is Tall Enough?

On the other hand, some homeowners prefer a structure that provides a bit more privacy. Privacy fences are often designed to block sightlines from nearby vehicles or pedestrians, but some properties in low-lying areas may require taller barriers. Fences that are designed with privacy and security in mind are often six feet tall or taller. However, local regulations may limit fence height in some areas. Be sure to discuss any local regulations with an expert fencing contractor to avoid noncompliance.

Keeping Pets and Kids Contained

When it comes to residential fence installation, many homeowners have children and pets to protect. Keeping pets and kids in an enclosed yard is often doable with a fence height of four to six feet. However, pet parents with large or particularly active dogs may need a barrier on the taller end of that spectrum. Furthermore, specially-designed pet fencing may be necessary to keep some dogs from digging beneath barriers.

Keeping Unwanted Animal Visitors Out

While a six-foot-tall fence may be enough to keep Fido in the yard, you might need something a bit more robust to keep out your neighborhood wildlife. Deer, raccoons, and other critters may find their way over or around some types of fences, and some species of deer can jump incredibly high. If deer or other wildlife are your primary concern, you may need a fence that is eight feet tall or more!
