Whether you have a puppy who digs around your fence a little too eagerly or natural erosion, gaps under fencing can render security features useless. If you have gaps under fencing in your yard, springtime is the perfect time to fill them up and keep your pets and children safe. Here are some of the most popular ways to fill gaps under fencing.
Stones
Use decorative stones or river rocks that are between 1-3 inches in diameter to fill the gaps under your fencing. Simply place the appropriate amount of rock into the gaps under fencing and use a bow rake to distribute them evenly over the area, pressing as needed.
Wood Pickets
If you have a wood fence with gaps under the fencing, blocking them can be a little bit more labor-intensive. Use horizontal pieces of wood that are parallel to the ground to cover the gaps and prevent further digging. Carefully measure the length of your fence and the depth of all the areas that need to be filled. Cut the planks appropriately to fit and use a drill to attach them. If you removed any dirt to install the new planks, backfill it in afterwards.
Concrete Blocks
Concrete blocks are not always the most attractive way to fill gaps under fencing, but if you have a heavy duty digger they might be necessary. Excavate the gap area, removing dirt to make a level area around the gap. Tamp the dirt down and add concrete wall stones, tamping them down as you go. Layer the concrete blocks in layers along the length of your fence to make sure all of the gaps under fencing are covered. Once you’re done, use the dirt to fill in any gaps.
