While Hercules installs fencing for businesses, residences, and other private properties, our Richmond location has worked extensively with government agencies to create practical fencing solutions for the state of Virginia. Over the last few years, Hercules Richmond has worked with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to install barriers in Albemarle, Greene, and Madison Counties. As part of this contract, our teams installed deer fencing along I-64 in Albemarle County in 2017. This deer fencing has performed incredibly well, significantly reducing deer-related accidents and saving money and lives.
Goals for New VDOT Deer Fencing
Thanks to a grant from the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC), the VDOT fencing contract for Albemarle, Greene, and Madison Counties included the installation of a wildlife fence aimed at channeling wildlife to specific underpasses where they could cross safely. The barrier was installed on I-64 between mile markers 115 and 116, both east- and westbound. The goal for this project was to drive deer and other wildlife to cross the interstate in particular culverts and bridges that would be safely out of motorists’ way, thereby reducing the risk and instance of deer-related crashes.
Impact of the Project
Since its installation, the wildlife fence has proven incredibly effective. Wildlife traffic along the designated alternative route has increased by 500% due to the fences guiding animals through. There has been a remarkable 98% reduction in deer-related vehicle crashes. In addition to saving motorists time thanks to the reduced instance of delay-causing car crashes, the project has also helped minimize the financial impact, health concerns, and loss of life associated with deer-related incidents. While a final report on these findings is still being drafted, the safety benefits of the wildlife barrier are substantial.
Future Applications for Hercules Richmond’s Fencing
Because of the project’s success, VTRC and Hercules Richmond are working together to draft a final report on this project and create a set of guidelines and standardized fencing practices for future applications. With time, similar barriers are likely to become instrumental in reducing the frequency of animal-related crashes, keeping Virginia drivers (and wildlife) safe from harm.
