New Year, New Fence: How to Install a New Fence the Right Way

Here are some tips to help you install a new fence without building a metaphorical wall between you and your neighbors.

Imagine that you have the perfect view looking out your kitchen window – you can easily see over your yard and your neighbor’s yard to the community playground where your kids like to play. You would probably be pretty ticked if your neighbor spontaneously put up a tall fence that blocked it. Likewise, it would probably be pretty irritating to have new neighbors build a fence on the property line, replacing the one that your old neighbors had self-installed 2 feet within their property lines so that you lose part of your garden. These are just some of the annoying scenarios that can arise when you don’t install a fence the right way – read on for more details.

Talk To The Neighbors

As annoying as the above scenarios would be for you, they will also be frustrating for your neighbors. And while you (in most cases) have the right to install a fence on your property without talking to them, it will be better for everyone if you talk to your neighbors first. Take the time to let them know that you’re considering a new or replacement fence and the type and height you’re considering. Your neighbors may not care that you’re planning a fence, or they may ask you to reconsider your choice. Ultimately, it is your decision, but taking their views into consideration will go a long way towards maintaining the peace.

Learn The Laws (Or Rules)

Before you decide on your fence, you will also need to check on the local rules and regulations for your area. Your city or county might have laws about where your fence can be in relation to the road and your property line, or how high it can be. If you have a home owners’ association, they may also have rules about having a fence.

Hire A Professional

Once you know that the fence you want is okay, it is time to find a professional to install it. Installing a fence is more complicated than you might expect, and a professional will be able to handle any necessary permits and legal issues for you. A professional will also know the options that are available to make everyone as happy as possible without sacrificing what you need out of your fence. Finally, a professional has the skills to install your new fence so that it is strong, sturdy, and beautiful.
