Choosing a fence style and design that will work best for your home, family, and style is a question of maintenance, location, pricing, and other factors that are unique to you. You may want to add curb appeal to your home or some privacy from your neighbors and security from your neighborhood. Follow this guide for help in deciding which type of fence is right for you.
Types
The style of the fence is just as important as the function of the fence. With that said, before you can choose which fence is right for you, should have an understanding of what types are available. There is aluminum, wood, PVC, wrought iron, and vinyl, among others. Which type will be best for you depends on the climate in which you live, the level of maintenance you can take on, and how well the fence type will complement your home and neighborhood.
Aluminum
Aluminum requires little maintenance but also doesn’t provide much privacy or security. It does come with options for paint colors and decoration. Aluminum is also lightweight and able to withstand constant exposure to the sun and rain.
Wood
Wood fences provide a classic style. They are strong and dependable but require more maintenance than other options. Wood fencing is susceptible to rotting, mold, mildew, and pest infestations. However, when properly maintained they are long-lasting, beautiful, and valuable.
PVC
Not only used for piping, but PVC is also an inexpensive and versatile option for fencing. Although not as sturdy as other materials it comes in a variety of heights and colors. PVC is often used to help repair wood fences by adding stability and to use less wood.
Wrought Iron
Wrought iron fencing arguable allows for the most individuality. You can create many ornate designs with wrought iron as it’s considered both a beautiful and strong material. As far as maintenance is concerned, you should sand and repaint wrought iron every two to three years to maintain its looks and integrity.
Vinyl
A vinyl fence will give you the strength of natural materials but with much less maintenance. If you don’t mind the higher initial costs, vinyl is easy to clean and maintain and will cost you less over the years.
