So you’ve decided to add a new fence to your property around your home? That’s an excellent idea. There are many huge benefits to installing a fence, including improved privacy, increased safety, and upgraded property value and curb appeal. As you’re deciding between the many options available for your new fence, keep in mind that most homeowners stick to the tried and true favorite and opt for a wood fence. There are many reasons that wood makes great fences, and, specifically, you should be considering a cedar fence for this home upgrade.
Benefits Of Cedar
Beyond the cost savings and traditional appeal of wooden fencing, cedar specifically has many benefits. This wood is naturally a beautiful red color that can be preserved over time by sealing or staining. If you don’t stain it, cedar naturally weathers into a silvery grey tone that many people love. If you want to preserve the red tone, you will need to stain or seal the fence, but this is not terribly difficult and only needs to be done every few years. Cedar also contains useful natural oils that repel insects and prevent rot (which is why it is often a top choice for closets and storage chests).
Cedar Vs. Other Wood
Cedar is a better fencing choice than other woods because it resists rot and insects. Pine is a popular choice, but it is a harder wood. While this might seem like a good thing, it actually makes the wood more prone to cracking. Pine is also harder to stain and must be stained more often than cedar.
Cedar Vs. Other Materials
Clearly, cedar is a strong choice on its own, but how does it compare to other materials? The other most popular options for fencing materials are vinyl and metal. Both of these are usually more expensive than wood, even cedar, but metal is particularly so. Metal will make a beautiful, ornate fence, but is often not the best choice for privacy. PVC, on the other hand, is a better choice for privacy. It is more expensive than wood upfront, but it has very low maintenance costs over the years. PVC can mimic the look of wood, but it is imperfect and often loses a lot of the character and warmth that a true wood fence gives. Finally, plastic-type materials may warp or become brittle in very hot or very cold areas or areas with a huge fluctuation in temperatures.
