Vinyl fence is prized by homeowners for its toughness. In terms of weight to strength ratio, only aluminum is comparable to vinyl. Vinyl fence can stand up to many years of exposure to the elements, all while needing relatively little maintenance or vinyl fence repair. It’s no wonder vinyl is so popular among homeowners as a new fencing material.
But, like any building material, vinyl isn’t impervious. A strong storm can bring a branch down on your vinyl fence, cracking one of the boards. Maybe the wind pushed an open gate around, causing a crack. The fact is, things happen, and vinyl can break. So what do you do when a vinyl fence is in need of a touch up? Vinyl Fence Repair
The first thing you need to decide when approaching a damaged vinyl fence is whether it needs to be repaired or replaced. Generally speaking, smaller cracks are pretty easy to fix on your own. But larger areas of damage (from a large branch, for example) are much harder to repair on your own. You might consider replacement instead.
Preparing the Fence for Repair
First, you’ll want to clean the area around the damage. Warm water and a mild detergent, along with a cloth or scrub brush should be enough to do the job.
Next, you’ll want to take care of any jagged edges. Use a utility knife to pare down large protrusions, and then use sandpaper for a finer touch.
Making the Repair
Remember to always wear safety equipment and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when working with vinyl fence repair products.
If you’re dealing with a crack or hole that is less than 1½”in diameter, a great product to use is PVC glue. There are also solvents available that will melt the vinyl, which makes it so you can fuse it back together.
For a larger repair, use expanding foam. Allow the foam to dry, trim it to fit the crack, and the top it off with a urethane/epoxy resin, or plastic automotive body filler.
After fixing any size crack, sand the area of the repair again, remove sanding dust, and finish with spray paint.
