Invisible fencing is an alternative to traditional fencing that some homeowners use in order to keep their pets on their property. The fence sets up an invisible perimeter around the house past which a dog wearing a special collar can’t go without getting a shock from the collar.
If you’re debating whether you should get a traditional fence or an invisible fence, it’s important to consider the pros and cons of both options. As far as invisible fencing goes, there are a few downsides that you should factor into your decision.
Invisible Fencing isn’t 100% Effective
Just because the dog gets a shock when it reaches the invisible perimeter, doesn’t mean it will automatically be deterred from going any farther. If the dog is intent on chasing a squirrel, it might just run right through the fence and put up with whatever shock it receives.
Limited Range
The perimeter of the fence is actually created from a central location. As such, the range of the fence is limited. If you have a big yard, you might not be able to cover the entirety of it with an invisible fence. Why restrict your dog to just one part of the yard? There’s an interesting smell right beyond his reach that he wants to investigate.
Inability to Accommodate for Unusual Yard Shapes
An invisible fence creates a circular boundary, which might not overlap with the boundary of your yard. If your yard juts in at one point and then extends far out at another, an invisible fence will not be able to cover this effectively.
Power Outages
Is the power out? Then your invisible fence is no longer. Power outages mean your invisible fence is down until the power comes back on.
All in all, we think traditional fencing works a lot better if your goal is to create a space where your pet can run around safely. With a traditional fence, there’s no way for your pet to escape, it won’t get shocked every time it gets close to the edge of the fence, and the fence will never go down because of a power outage.
